Students are trained to accurately translate diverse demanding texts from English into Slovene. Particular attention is paid to frequent problems in translation regarding cultural terms, terminology, etc. Students expand their knowledge on how to use general and specialized (also technical) dictionaries as well as other lexicographic reference material. A thorough source-language text analysis enables students to get to know the syntactic, lexical and stylistic characteristics of the English language. While considering the interlinguistic and intercultural differences, students learn to think of the translational process as a complete and creative process, whose end-product should be a comprehensible text which retains the information-value, the aim, and the effect of the original while shedding that language typicality of the English original which is foreign to Slovene. In the seminar students are expected to present their own translations of thematically diverse texts prepared at home and compare them in terms of pragmatics, textual characteristics, lexical nuances and style, discuss various translation variants and sources used (dictionaries, encyclopaedias, the Internet, parallel texts). Selected topics of Slovenian-English contrastive analysis are also discussed, particularly at syntactic and textual levels, as the focus is on decoding, i.e. translation from English as a foreign language into Slovene – the mother tongue.
