This course follows two parallel paths: providing a survey of classical criticism as a background to modern literary theory and criticism, and illustrating some contemporary trends in criticism with exemplary interpretations of key classical texts (Homer, Attic tragedy, Augustan poetry, ancient novel) and of moments of their modern reception:
I. Gorgias, Plato, Aristotle, Horace, ps.-Longinus;
II. scriptural hermeneutics; structuralism; Bachtin and dialogism; theories of intertextuality; deconstruction; feminist criticism; psychoanalysis.
