PREDAVANJE 14. 5. 2025 (13:00-14:40, predavalnica 01)

Legacies of the Japanese American Wartime Experience: The Model Minority Myth and the Struggle for Collective Liberation

This lecture will examine the experience of Japanese Americans during World War II, including pre-war hysteria, forced removal and incarceration, and post-war trauma and healing. In sharing stories from his own family history, including excerpts from his great grandfather's written memoir, Kikuchi draws parallels between the Japanese American experience and that of other communities impacted by systemic racism. A particular focus will be on the model minority myth, and how the perpetuation of that myth impacts the Japanese American role in collective liberation movements globally.
